That Bunsen is not the inventor of the Bunsen Burner does not make him any the less interesting. A glittering career in chemistry saw him make or contribute to many breakthroughs whilst also improving the scientists' lot as a whole.

George Washington Carver gained international recognition for his research into agriculture and foodstuffs. He developed a number of products from simple foods such as peanuts and sweet potatoes. That he did this at a time when it was difficult to be both black and respected makes his achievements all the more significant.

The Russian Chemist Dmitry Mendeleyev first classified the elements based on their atomic structures together with their chemical & physical properties. Incredibly, for someone who so revolutionised a field of science, he did not win a Nobel prize, missing out by just one vote.
